What if you did your job in such a way that others would pay you to watch you work?
Legendary is doing something in a unique way that cannot be copied or replicated. It takes drive, passion and commitment to be legendary at what you do and all of that comes from your personal engine.
What is your Engine?
It’s Your… Motor, your Focus, your Performance Mode…. (i.e. Monster Mode, Beast Mode, Get-R-Dun Mode…etc.), your Machine, essentially it is YOUR ENGINE.
We hear people say, “Man that guy has got a serious motor.” This implies he has the ability to grind, to see an idea through to its logical conclusion, to do whatever it takes to get where he is going, but some obviously have bigger engines than others. Some go to a level and shut it down. Some just keep going. Today we study the why and how behind the engine and ask the million dollar question…
Where does your ENGINE come from? Most psychologists would tell us that the ambition in some comes from some deep lacking from the past. They have a desire to be known, to make a difference, to take something all the way, or to fill a missing void in their life. I personally think it is something deep inside an individual who is in a sprint toward their potential and don’t want to waste a life of meaning and purpose. Those that don’t have it just haven’t found the purpose, the why, and therefore can’t seem to find the engine. They wander around aimlessly while those with the engine run circles around them.
Can I just “buy an engine?” In some cases, you come to the conclusion that you just don’t have the drive, and therefore you want to “buy the engine” of someone else who can make it happen.
Can I just jump onto someone else’s Legendary? NO!
Why do I struggle with this so much? Because legendary requires risk and the monster called fear rises up and begins to have a dialog with us about how we aren’t good enough.
It’s all about you!
The first sale you need to make every day is to your own self. It’s called the “backstage sell.” The words you say to yourself matters! So what should you be telling yourself first thing in the morning? Here is a list of affirmations I use to get started:
- I am a “person of impact”
- I have big things inside me that I need to act on.
- The world is counting on me to come through.
- There will be a departure from the ideal day, so I can get bitter or better.
- Success is my duty and obligation.
- God gave me potential as a gift. My gift back is to act on it.
The confidence battle takes place between the ears but is drastically affected by who you listen to, what kind of action you take, what results you get, and what you believe at your core. I believe that conventional wisdom has confidence all wrong. They think the first step is the hardest. Anybody can take the first step. What’s actually the hardest is the 3rd, 4th, and 5th step. This is where commitment comes in.
Every relationship will go through the cycles of passion, duty, burden, and commitment. The key is to see something through to its logical conclusion even on days when you don’t feel like it. This is why every single day you have to wake up and sell yourself to yourself. You have to affirm and re-commit to your vision daily or you will become discouraged and retreat and contract.
This is what separates contenders from pretenders and pretenders are not people who live their legend!
Remember this – insecurity always pulls us backward to seek comfort and complacency. Confident people want risk and opportunity. They are not intimidated by others because they have already made the most important sale of the day to their own self.
